About Mia S. Scotland Contact Mia

I am is a registered, accredited and chartered Clinical Psychologist with over 25 years experience of helping people meet and overcome emotional challenges.  I specialise in providing psychological therapy to draw out existing strengths and facilitate personal growth. I am registered and accredited by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and the British Psychological Society (BPS). The approach that I use draws on Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Compassion Focused Therapy, Positive Psychology and Stress Management training and hypnotherapy.

My speciality is working with people in the childbearing years, in particular antenatal mental health, birth preparation, postnatal mental health, birth trauma, and menopause.  I also have extensive experience of working with teenagers, adults, parents, healthcare professionals and healthcare teams.

I receive referrals from solicitors and care-coordinators to provide medico-legal assessments, reports and treatment.

I run in-service workshops nationally and internationally for teams. These focus on enhancing compassionate care, reducing burnout, team building, resilience training, morale boosting and more.

I have been a Birth Doula for over 15 years, co-founded the Mindful Mamma one day Hypnobirthing workshop, and I am the author of the book “Why Perinatal Depression Matters”  and “Birth Shock: how to recover from Birth Trauma” published by Pinter and Martin.

Historically, I did my psychology degree at Wolverhampton, with first class honours. I then completed my MSc. in Clinical Psychology at Leicester University (the following year, the course was transformed into a Doctorate, so I just missed out on being able to use the title “Doctor”).

Having completed my training with the NHS in 1995, I worked there for over 15 years, focusing on treating a range of adult mental health problems. During my time in the NHS I worked with the eminent Professor Paul Gilbert in the art of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and Compassion Focused Therapy as well as working in a Psycho-sexual unit helping couples with relationship problems.

I have since continually updated my development and training with ongoing courses and reading, particularly in the fields of Compassionate Mind, Mindfulness, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Trauma, Birth and pregnancy, hypnosis techniques, the Rewind technique, pain management, positive psychology, and more.
